Tell us a bit about yourself and how you got into art!
Painting has been an integral part of my life for as long as I can remember. I began my artistic journey with a focus on graphic design and illustration, while simultaneously exploring various fine art techniques. Along the way, I had the opportunity to participate in group exhibitions, and it was a tremendous honour to see some of my work displayed in galleries. My involvement with interior designers also grew, as I collaborated with them to create bespoke artworks for their clients.
How would you describe the art you love creating?
The art I create can be characterised as colourful, statement-driven, and radiating positivity. It embodies an urban vibe, often serving as eye-catching “wall candy” that transforms spaces. My work falls within the realms of contemporary, abstract, and decorative art, intertwining these elements into a unique tapestry of creativity.
What influences your artistic vision and style?
My artistic vision and style are influenced by a blend of factors. Pop culture and contemporary art infuse my work with a modern edge, while nature’s beauty and an array of colours provide a constant source of inspiration. I’m drawn to organic shapes that contrast with geometric forms. My close collaboration with interior designers and clients further shapes my approach, allowing me to craft bespoke pieces that harmonise with specific spaces.
Are there any present-day artists whose creations resonate with you and that you find particularly compelling?
The present-day art scene is brimming with incredible talents, making it challenging to pinpoint a single artist. However, I’m consistently awestruck by the grandeur of large-scale decorative street art that I encounter.
Among the various materials you engage with, which one do you find the most fulfilling to work with, and what draws you to it?
Acrylic paints are my medium of choice. The wide range of products available for acrylics allows artists to experiment and create distinctive works. This realm of possibilities is akin to alchemy, where each combination brings something unique to the canvas. Moreover, the archival quality of the paints ensures the longevity of the artwork.
Can you walk us through your artistic process, starting from the initial spark of an idea to the actualisation of the finished artwork?
Ideas for my creations stem from a myriad of sources—references I’ve collected over the years, photographs I’ve taken, and inspiration drawn from interiors, fabrics, and textures. Often, I work on commissioned pieces that align with a client’s vision. I approach a blank canvas by establishing the background, which can involve techniques such as splashing, dripping, and adding texture. From there, I shape the composition, incorporating structured elements and finer details. The process isn’t always linear; sometimes, I find myself working in reverse order, letting the artwork’s evolution guide my steps.
Could you share some insights into your current creative endeavours and projects?
Currently, I’m immersed in creating a series of artworks inspired by pop culture. Additionally, I serve as a Golden Artist Educator for Golden Paints, engaging in demonstrations and facilitating art workshops that allow me to share my passion and expertise with fellow artists.
